Lisa is new to VMS this year and we are very happy to have her. Personally I very impressed with how amazing and well rounded is is. Lisa has been in the US Navy for over 10 years. She works in the aviation field at HSM-48 NS Mayport. She has been in Jacksonville almost 4 years and hopes to stay here and make it her home. Lisa is a 4th year PhD student at Walden University where she studies Organizational Psychology.
She has competed in numerous swim events, Sprint and Olympic distance races and running races. She is interested in getting more involved in mountain biking and off road races. Currently she is training for her first 70.3.
Lisa keeps herself very, very busy. In addition to her work and studies, gives back to her community. She has an extensive swim background and loves to be in the water more than anything else. She is a coach for a local swim team. The kids and teens love her there. She is a great role model for them. They trust her and confide in her.
Her most impressive achievement recently was a local swim fundraiser. This month Lisa swam for Up the River Downtown.
"Up The River Downtown was a 10k river swim from the St. Johns Riverkeeper headquarters at Jacksonville University to the Riverside Arts Market on Saturday, September 7, 2013, in Jacksonville, FL. The ten swimmers in the event were surrounded by a flotilla of boats, kayaks and stand up paddlers. The swimmers collected donations which benefited the Special Olympics Florida." - Bruce Lipsky
Lisa said, "I did Up the River for multiple reasons, primary reason was to raise $ for the Special Olympics, other reason(s) are to highlight our waterways in Jacksonville, engage the city about taking care of what we have and implore greater respects to being a part of something good."
"Jim Albiso, of Jumping Fish invited me to the swim, and has been organizing this/these efforts for the past 4 years. I plan to be a part of this event every year."
When asked about her nutrition plan she said, "Nutrition is somewhat simple, mixture of ice water, coconut water and nuun tabs. Generally I do not drink too much water while swimming, but hydrate enough the day prior. Additionally I consume about 30-50 mgs of caffeine every 90 min. Prior to the event I eat either wheat bagel or PB&J, nothing heavy. I carry at least two GU packs with me just in case, but swimmers are not big eaters while they are swimming."
How did she train for this event? Lisa said, "To swim a 10k, I will generally swim about 15k -20k a week, for this one I was around 12k-15k per week, I think that was plenty though, this was not a race, just an event; If I were training to race, ehhh... then we get up closer to 20k per week."
Did you have problems with sunburn or chaffing? "I always use vasaline or lanolin on my skin to prevent chaffing (arm pits & neck mostly), I always use Vasaline personally."
She added, "The best part about Up the River is the people, everyone shares the same values and passions for the sport, as well as toward the cause. Swimmers are family even if you've never met before, and with this event it bring us even closer. To view the city from the river is quite magical and I would invite anyone to indulge."
